2022 PARK CITIES QUAIL COALITION GRANTS.

We're proud of our commitment to organizations that assist in the preservation, research and conservation of the quail wildlife. In 2022 we awarded almost $1.3 million dollars.

2022 Park Cities Quail Coalition Grants

​

Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation – Annual Operating Budget – $615,000

A grant to cover operating expenses for 2023 at the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch. The funds will cover all payroll, project expenses, data tracking, and day to day expenses for RPQRR, a 4,700-acre research ranch solely focused on quail in Roby, Texas. PCQC has partnered with Bass Pro Shop's/Cabela's Outdoor Fund using part of Johnny Morris' $1 million pledge from our 2019 Dinner & Auction in RPQRR's continuing efforts to research quail biology in the Rolling Plains region.

 

American Bird Conservancy – Grassland Bird Initiatives - $155,000

A grant towards funding ongoing habitat and research initiatives focused on grassland birds in our region. This is a matching grant, which our 2022 T. Boone Pickens Award recipient, Walter Matia contributed to, as well as an anonymous donor matching both our contribution and Walter's.

 

Texas Tech Wildlife Toxicology Lab – Mobilization of Mobile Laboratory - $55,000

A grant to fund operations of the Mobile Research Lab, which will be stationed at various towns around the Rolling Plains to observe and monitor parasite incidences in bobwhite quail.

 

The Quail-Tech Alliance – Supplemental Feed Study With Protein Packs - $100,000

A grant to fund studies on a proprietary protein pack for use in supplemental feeding programs. Expanding on Quail Tech's previous studies on conventional supplemental feeding, this study focuses on a specialized protein feed pack for optimum quail nutrition.

 

Borderlands Research Institute – Montezuma Quail Population Survey - $67,000

A grant to fund a study to gain a better understanding of Montezuma Quail Populations in the Trans-Pecos region. Currently, there is no hunting season for Montezuma Quail in Texas, and this would be the first step in determining whether it could be proposed to Texas Parks & Wildlife.

 

National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative – Ag Policy Liaison in Washington, D.C. - $60,000

A grant to fund an Ag Policy Liaison in Washington, D.C., who will be an advocate for bobwhite quail on Capitol Hill. The Ag Policy Liaison will work with legislators to ensure the best interests of quail and other songbirds are considered in Farm Bill and other policy proposals.

Tall Timbers Research Station – Western Pineywoods Quail Program - $50,000

A grant to introduce intensive quail restoration efforts in the Piney Woods Region of Texas. TTRS has revolutionized the process of sustaining viable quail populations on the East coast and will establish its management system to try to restore quail populations in East Texas. PCQC and Bass Pro Shop's/Cabelas Outdoor Fund continue to partner in funding the research conducted at TTRS.

 

Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation – Outdoor Adventures Cup Sporting Clays Sponsorship - $25,000

Sponsorship of the OA Cup Sporting Clays event. PCQC has served as the Title Sponsor of this event since 2018, and the event raises money to support the installation of Outdoor Education programs focused on fishing and hunting in secondary schools across the U.S.

Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation – Quail Education Program in Schools - $15,000

A grant to fund development and implementation of a quail education section of Outdoor Adventures teaching curriculum in secondary schools across the U.S. The Outdoors Adventures education programs are used to teach secondary school students on hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities in over 1,000 schools across the country.

Bobwhite Brigades – Youth Outreach Camp - $20,000

A grant to support the annual Bobwhite Brigades camps, which is a summer camp focused on developing leadership skills in teenagers. The curriculum focuses on quail biology and land management practices.

Veterans Grant – Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch - $120,000

A grant funded by a special Live Auction Item for veterans support programs, which sold for $200,000 at our 2020 Dinner & Auction. The funds will be used to develop facilities and a program to train military veterans for careers in ranch and land management.

2021 Park Cities Quail Coalition Grants

Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation – Annual Operating Budget – $650,000

A grant to cover operating expenses for 2022 at the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch. The funds will cover all payroll, project expenses, data tracking, and day to day expenses for RPQRR, a 4,700-acre research ranch solely focused on quail in Roby, Texas. PCQC has partnered with Bass Pro Shop's/Cabela's Outdoor Fund using part of Johnny Morris' $1 million pledge from our 2019 Dinner & Auction in RPQRR's continuing efforts to translocate wild quail in Erath County and west Texas.

A grant towards funding construction of a new state of the art headquarters for RPQRR on the ranch. The new facility will have a research lab, guest lodge, classroom for outreach programs, and kitchen. The facility is designed with focus on the environment and surroundings.

A grant to fund a study evaluating variables in supplemental feeding. The study will focus on methods, timing, and feeding rates to develop best practices for feeding.

University of North Texas – LLELA Quail Study - $8,000

A grant to fund ongoing studies on the Lake Lewisville Educational Learning Area in North Texas. The program is releasing and monitoring quail on the nature area in the Metroplex, and will monitor quail movement and survival.

Veterans Grant – Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch - $150,000

A grant funded by a special Live Auction Item for veterans support programs, which sold for $200,000 at our 2020 Dinner & Auction. The funds will be used to develop facilities and a program to train military veterans for careers in ranch and land management.

Texas Tech Wildlife Toxicology Lab – Analytical Study for FDA Approval of Medicated Feed - $200,000

A grant to fund continuance of lab research in support of FDA trials for a medicated feed for eyeworm control. Upon FDA approval, the QuailGuard product will be licensed by QuailGuard, LLC, which is a joint venture between Park Cities Quail Coalition, Texas Tech University, and Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation.

The Quail-Tech Alliance – Automated Covey Call Recording Software System - $80,000

A grant to fund a study on the effectiveness of automated recording devices to conduct covey call surveys in the field. Covey call counts are labor-intensive and timing-dependent as they are currently performed, and this study will explore the usability and reliability of an automated surveying system.

The funds will cover all payroll, project expenses, data tracking, and day to day expenses for RPQRR, a 4,700-acre research ranch solely focused on quail in Roby, Texas. As part of RPQRR's ongoing efforts to translocate wild quail, PCQC partnered with a grant from Bass Pro Shop's/Cabela's Outdoor Fund to assist in wild quail translocation projects in Erath County.

Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation – Construction of New Headquarters Facilities - $345,000

A grant to assist in funding the construction of a new research and hospitality complex at the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch in Roby, Texas. This new complex will usher in the future of RPQRR, replacing older isolated buildings in need of repair. The complex will include a research lab, lodging for special guests, bunkhouses, and special events building for large groups with a commercial kitchen.

 

The Quail-Tech Alliance – Predator Management Study - $130,000

A grant to fund a second-year continuance study on effects of predator management on quail chick survival and quail populations. The study will be conducted on the 6666 Ranch.

 

Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation – Quail Translocation Project - $107,000

A grant to fund a bobwhite quail translocation project on up to 3 ranches in the Rolling Plains region. This will be a cooperative project with landowners to study the viability of translocating wild quail and establishing protocols that net the best success for survival.

 

Texas Tech Wildlife Toxicology Lab – Analytical Study for FDA Approval of Medicated Feed - $100,000

A grant to fund continuance of lab research in support of FDA trials for a medicated feed for eyeworm control.

 

Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership – Ag Policy Liaison in Washington, D.C. - $95,000

A grant to fund an Ag Policy Liaison in Washington, D.C., who will be an advocate for bobwhite quail on Capitol Hill. The Ag Policy Liaison will work with legislators to ensure the best interests of quail and other songbirds are considered in Farm Bill and other policy proposals.

 

Tall Timbers Research Station – Brood Survival Study - $88,517

A grant to study factors influencing brood survival of bobwhites across several eco-regions. Nests will be monitored and newly hatched chicks will be tagged and monitored to compare survivability. PCQC partnered with Bass Pro Shop's/Cabela's Outdoor Fund on this project using grant funding from Johnny Morris' $1 million pledge at our 2019 Dinner & Auction.

 

The Quail-Tech Alliance – Supplemental Feeding Study - $75,000

A grant to study the impact of supplemental feeding a specially formulated protein pack into quail habitat on the 6666 Ranch. Impacts on chick survival and nest success will be monitored.

 

Borderlands Research Institute – Eye-worms in Desert Quail - $75,000

A grant to study the occurrence of eyeworms in desert quail in the Trans-Pecos region. PCQC has led the way in funding eyeworm studies in the Rolling Plains, and this study will expand to other species and a new ecoregion.

 

Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation – OA Cup Sponsorship and Quail Module for Outdoor Adventures Program - $45,000

Sponsorship of the OA Cup Sporting Clays event. PCQC has served as the Title Sponsor of this event since 2018, and the event raises money to support the installation of Outdoor Education programs focused on fishing and hunting in secondary schools across the U.S. This grant also includes additional funding to develop implementation of a “quail module” component of the education program currently utilized in participating schools.

 

Bobwhite Brigades – Youth Outreach Camp - $15,000

A grant to support the annual Bobwhite Brigades camps, which is a summer camp focused on developing leadership skills in teenagers. The curriculum focuses on quail biology and land management practices.

 

Western Navarro Bobwhite Restoration Initiative - $15,000

A grant to fund habitat restoration to native grasses on lands in Navarro County. The funds will be used for seed purchases and herbicide treatments to better establish native grasses.

A grant to be used to purchase a new truck for transport of rehabilitating Veterans to hunting and fishing excursions.

 

Veterans Grant – Heroes on the Water - $12,100

A grant to be used to purchase kayaks and fishing gear for rehabilitating injured veterans by hosting them on fishing excursions.

A grant to study the selection of roost sites for bobwhite quail broods and their impact on chick survival. Using new FLIR technology, broods will be located, chicks will be tagged, and they will be monitored for movement and survival.

 

Borderlands Research Institute – Eye-worms in Scaled Quail - $75,000

A grant to study the occurrence of eyeworms in scaled quail in the Trans-Pecos region. PCQC has led the way in funding eyeworm studies in the Rolling Plains, and this study will expand to scaled quail and a new ecoregion.

 

Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation – Outdoor Adventures Cup Sponsorship - $25,000

A grant funded by a special Live Auction Item for Veterans support programs, which sold for $200,000 at our 2018 Dinner & Auction. The funds will be used to construct handicap accessible bunkhouses at the Thumbtack Ranch for hosting Veterans. The funds will also be used to purchase clay throwers for a sporting clays course for Veterans on the Thumbtack Ranch.

 

Veterans Grant – Helicopters for Heroes - $27,000

A grant funded by a special Live Auction Item for Veterans support programs, which sold for $200,000 at our 2018 Dinner & Auction. The grant will be used to purchase (2) motorized wheelchairs for veterans severely injured in combat.

 

Veterans Grant – Combat Marine Outdoors - $20,000

A grant funded by a special Live Auction Item for Veterans support programs, which sold for $200,000 at our 2018 Dinner & Auction. The grant will be used to purchase a new Polaris Ranger 900 Crew and trailer for use in rehabilitating Veterans on hunting and fishing excursions.

 

Veterans Grant – Project Healing Waters - $20,000

A grant funded by a special Live Auction Item for veterans support programs, which sold for $200,000 at our 2018 Dinner & Auction. The grant will be used to fund fishing trips and fly tying sessions for rehabilitating injured combat veterans.

 

Veterans Grant – Veterans Outdoors - $15,000

A grant funded by a special Live Auction Item for Veterans support programs, which sold for $200,000 at our 2018 Dinner & Auction. The grant will be used to host injured veterans on hunting and fishing excursions, working to rehabilitating them by providing enjoyable experiences in the outdoors.
